Back about the time when Arctic Cat came out with their bright green belly pans and Ski-Doo came out with their bright yellow belly pans (1996), the need for some type of cleaner to remove the two-stroke oil and exhaust residue from these bright-colored sleds really became apparent.

Over the years, we've used a number of cleaners and solvents. Many of them were quite nasty to have in contact with your hands, things like butane lighter fluid and copier white-board cleaners. Some of the solvents that took off the black residue also wreaked havoc on the soft bright plastic, as well.

For the past few seasons, we've settled down to using "safer" cleaners. One cleaner we've really found to be the best of all is called "Sled Brite Belly Pan Cleaner and Degreaser". This biodegradable cleaner emulsifies the oil and grease, and really does a great job at loosening the oil residue that makes your bright sled look so bad.

We've found it works best if you can spray it on and give it some time to do its work. Think of it as a soaking time. Spray some on, catch the initial run-off at the bottom and let it sit. 3-4 minutes seems to be plenty, as it eats away and breaks down the crap so you can wipe it off instead of having to scrub it off. Then spray some more on, let it set, wipe it off. Time is your friend. Really tough stains will still benefit from the use of a stiff nylon brush. but if you use the cleaner often it won't get to that point. Some old deposits can actually get "cooked" into the plastic, so they might not be entirely removable (a good reason to clean it more often then less).

Belly Pan Cleaner

Everyone who owns a snowmobile with a bright colored bellypan knows what happens when two-stroke exhaust accumulated around the exhaust outlet. Or how about REV riders with bright yellow side panels that turn black and ugly.

There has been much discussion on how to clean these surfaces. Many of the solvents and cleaners found to remove the dirt and grime also damage the plastic, or are bad to have absorbed into your skin and bloodstream. We’ve had pretty good success using gritty citrus hand cleaner, applying it with a brush and letting it sit and chemically do its thing for a few minutes, going back over it a few times to fully remove the crap. The citrus-based gritty hand cleaners are easily available and do a fairly good job, but do require a bit of elbow work to get it all the way clean.

Last season we got a hold of a product called “Sled Brite Belly Pan Cleaner” manufactured by Bio-Kleen Products of Kalamazoo, Michigan. This product was said to be 100% biodegradable and would safely remove carbon deposits, dissolve belt dust residue and emulsify grease and oils.

We had plenty of dirty REVs to try it on, and we did. The instructions tell you to spray it on and let set for 3-4 minutes, then scrub and spray off with water. Most of the time we just sprayed it on and let it do its thing for a few minutes, then wiped all of the ugly stuff right off. Tough deposits may require a stiff brush, so a nylon brush was also found to come in handy.

If we could only use one belly pan cleaner, this would be it. Overall this cleaner works as promoted and does a really good job at easily dissolving most of the crud on our bellypans and side panels. Some of the cooked-in oil deposits around the exhaust outlet are difficult for any cleaner to remove, and we sometimes still resort to a combination of cleaner to fully finish the job, but we have found the Sled Brite cleaner to be a valuable addition to our arsenal of sled cleaning products. It seems to be some form of soap cleaner rather than a solvent, so we are more confident letting it contact our skin than with petroleum-based solvents. Does it work? Yes. We were really expecting to break knuckles trying to get rid of the belt and exhaust dust and grime on the belly pan, but the cleaner simply wiped off. Spray the cleaner on, wait 3-4 minutes and wipe off with a damp rag. It’s nice to see a cleaner specifically formulated for the grease and grime that get’s on your sled. Make sure you do this is a well ventilated area or you might have way too much fun cleaning your sled, it’s quite potent.
